First day at my WLE: Nov 3rd

My first day at my WLE went well, I got to meet the other interns and get to know about Suzanne's business. I don't know if I did anything to impress her, I did act very interested and talked to her a lot about the WLE program and just got to know her. I think I will need help with the classes, I don't know how to help little children. My internship is very relaxed, we can stop and eat at any time, and we can work on our own art project sometimes. Also, when there are art classes, we do the project with them if we want to. Its a very fun internship. I don't have any questions for anyone.

How I got my WLE: Oct 26th

I had wanted to intern at a hospice or a somewhere that does physical therapy, but most places did not want an intern or did not have a lot for me to do there. My mom went into a art store and was talking to the lady there, and mentioned me and my school. It turned out she had an intern from Impact last year and she was going to have another one this year. My mom had me call her and talk to her, and she decided to take me as another intern because I told her I could be flexible with the hours I come and work, and I told her I would even be willing to stop by after school on wednesdays and work for a few hours. She also goes to schools to paint murals, so she was glad that I had a car so I could just meet her there and I wouldn't be an inconvenience to her. That was the main reason I was able to get this internship. It wasn't what I was looking for, but I hadn't found an internship yet, and this one seemed interesting, so I went ahead with it. The main leadership skill I had to use was persuasive communication by telling her how I would be a good intern. My mentors name is Suzanne Gayle and her business is Stararts. Her studio is located near Cal State East Bay next to Bronco Billy's Pizza. What I will be doing with Suzanne is learning about art and murals, learning how to prepare a lesson and teach it effectively, helping with her projects, and helping her out with her classes that she teaches.

POST 1: How I plan to get my WLE: January 6th

The type of internship I was originally interested in doing was something around child adoption or foster care. After a while I extended my search to woman's shelters and homeless shelters. Many places were not accepting high school students as interns or had no need for an intern or volunteer. On Wednesday I had not yet set up an internship so I was e-mailing and making phone calls (which I was very nervous about at first). By the end of the day I still didn't have an internship. A week later my friend told me  about her moms job at Tri-Valley Haven, and I got my internship with her.

POST 2: First Official WLE: January 20th

On my first day, my mentor, Jean, picked me up at my house and we went to the site where her office is. She introduced me to some of the staff, and gave me and her daughter Morgan a pile of papers to get started with. Morgan and I had to make copies and make packets. Morgan showed me how to use the copier and helped me understand how to change settings and make different kinds of copies. Later she and I started looking through binders to make sure they all matched the master copy, we got through two or three by the end of the day and organized everything so we could continue the next week.

I think this first day went well. Once I got the hang of how to use the copier, things went faster, and sorting the papers into packet takes some time, but it will get easier. I think my mentor and her co-workers are glad to have me there because there are a lot of papers that need to be filed and copied, and there are other things that need to be done, like cleaning the windows and tables in the conference room, so I don't have a lot of "down time", but I don't feel stressed by the work,  so I feel comfortable. I understand my daily tasks and currently have no questions for my mentor or my academic seminar teacher.

POST 3: Second WLE: January 27th

This week was similar to last week, still getting used to the copy machine and doing small jobs, cleaning and organizing.

POST 4: Third WLE: February 3rd

I did not go to my WLE this Wednesday. I was sick, so I asked my mentor if she wanted me to go, she told me that she thought we shouldn't go because there were a lot of people at the office who were  sick  as well. What I did instead that day was take my dog to the vet at 7:30 am, then go out to get breakfast with my grandpa. Afterward I swung by my mentors house to get her signature on my time log sheet. My grandpa  and I went to several places to pick up things I would need to take care of my dog after we picked him up from the vet. We also bought some other things we needed for the house. Then around 5:00 we took my other dog into the vet and then brought both dogs home afterward. I had to set up an area for one of my dogs to stay in while he heals, and I gave him his medicines the vet had told me to give him. Although I did not go to my WLE, I still had a very productive day and got a lot of things done that needed to be done.

POST 5: Fourth WLE: February 10th

This Wednesday was a bit different from the first couple of times that i went. The first thing we did was go to the food pantry, which is a location where they hand out food  to women and families who need it. A woman there showed us what to do, we had to prepare bags of food that get handed out, my friend and I stayed there until about 3:00 bagging food, i think about 70 bags, while my mentor Jean, went to one of the shelters. We got a lot done there and it was fun. The project I am going to do is a supply drive for them. I talked to them about it, they told me some of the things they are always in need of as well as some things they rarely get.  Yesterday I started by picking up a box of cans from molly that were never donated after week  without walls, so she let me take them to start my supply drive.
Tomorrow morning, there is a garage sale that is being held by people from the organization to help raise money. I am going to go to make up some hours, my mentor told me she wont be there, but she gave me information for who to talk to at the event, and they will let her know how long I worked. They are supposed to start setting things up at 7am, and end around 2pm, but they will still need to clean up afterward, so I will be there for most of the day. I am sort of excited to be helping out, even though I'm going to have to wake up at 6 am.

POST 6: Fifth WLE: February 17th

today, we helped out the people in the office, mostly one woman who always seems to have a lot to do and seems a bit stressed out. we photo copied packets for her, and condensed them. we always seem to spend a lot of time around the copy machine...I think I'm going to miss it the most  when my internship is over. Ha ha. another thing we were asked to do was organize this area where a lot of office supplies are kept. We did get through some of it, but it took a very long time, and we finally gave up because there were so many random things that we didn't know where to put them. But they appreciated our efforts anyway.

POST 7: Sixth WLE: February 24th

This Wednesday, Jean dropped Morgan and I off at the food pantry. when we got there, they had a cake and were about to sing happy birthday to one of the staff members that works there. Morgan and I joined in and wished him a happy birthday. I had a slice of cake and then got to work. we had to make 50 packets, and then once again, put food into bags like we did two weeks ago. That was all we did for the rest of the day actually. but we did get to take a few breaks and joke around with one of the staff members that likes to tease us and make fun of us sometimes, hes very funny.  the day went by quickly because we worked fast to get the bags done, and kept the shelves full, so we were able to take several breaks and laughed and joked around. It was a good day.

POST 8: Seventh WLE: March 3rd

Well this wednesday, I went to the food pantry and worked there till around 3:00, there weren't a lot of people because of the rain, when we went to the community building, there wasn't much work that needed to be done, just a few small things, in general it was a very slow day.
Two weeks ago I was supposed to grade myself in Mastery of Knowledge, Application of Knowledge, Metacognition, Leadership Skills, and College Work Habits. For Mastery of knowledge I would give myself a 3, because I know most of what goes on and what I need to do, but I still have to rely on others to help me once in a while when I am asked to do something new. For Application of Knowledge, I would give myself a 4 because I now know most of what needs to be done, how to do it, and I get it done quickly and correctly. I also come have come up with ways to be more organized and efficient with some of the work, I also know what is wanted of me even if the person asking me to do it is struggling to explain it. For metacognition, I would give myself a 2 because I don't reflect to much on the work I have done. But I am glad to help people out who seem overwhelmed with work. I am happy to that I am there to take some of the work off their shoulders. As far as Leadership skills, I don't think there has been much opportunity for me to be a leader in a big way, but when Morgan and I have projects to do together, depending on the kind of project she and I are working on, one of us will take on the role of a leader, and we get the projects done quickly and effectively most of the time.
